Julie was disturbed out of her daydream by the persistent buzzing of her doorbell. She almost knocked her mug of tea over her keyboard in her rush to get up.

Opening the front door, she found herself face-to-face with the largest arrangement of pink flowers she’d ever seen outside of a really fancy wedding. A woman’s red face popped around it.

‘Julie?’

‘Yes.’

‘These are for you.’

‘Oh, wow.’ And then she saw that tied to the vase was a pair of pink Converse. ‘Oh my God.’ She took the flowers and nearly toppled over. ‘Thank you so much!’

‘They have everything they need, so you don’t need to arrange them. Just top up the water.’ The woman grinned. ‘Someone’s very keen to get in your good books. The card is tucked in the top.’

‘Thank you!’

She kicked the door shut and manoeuvred the flowers to her small circular dining table, where they took up most of the space. There were daisies and stocks and the most beautiful heirloom roses that smelled heavenly. In a daze, she found the card and removed it from the envelope. Though she’d never seen his handwriting, she somehow knew that the looping black ink was his.
